Arioso, Central Vermont’s chamber music ensemble, performs music for voice, viola, cello, and piano, including four Vermont composers , on August 30 through September 3 in Northfield, Richmond, and St. Albans. The members of Arioso are Elizabeth Reid, violin and viola;  Michael Close, cello;  Alison Cerutti, piano; and Linda Radtke; alto. The ensemble , called “deeply beautiful…simply a pleasure by Jim Lowe of the Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus, was formed in 2008, and debuted in May 2009, sponsored by the Paine Mountain Arts Council in Northfield and Cathedral Arts in Burlington.

It is a central mission of Arioso to highlight contemporary works, especially those of Vermont composers. This Labor Day weekend series features work by Erik Nielsen, Michael Close, Kathy Wonson Eddy, and Gwyneth Walker: Composer, as well as work by Brahms and Bach.

A piano trio by Worcester composer Michael Close will have its premiere at this series. The composer remarks, “ Mountain Music was inspired by experiences on a mountain bike trip from Canada to Mexico, following trails and back roads along the Continental Divide. Evoking scenes of starlit skies, Western honky-tonk bars, and battles against the elements , this work is an exciting romp through the Rocky Mountains.”

"From the Depths of the Soul" by Gwyneth Walker ,also a premiere, explores the power of the African-American spiritual tradition, from “Deep River” to folk tunes “Every Night When the Sun Goes Down” and “Down to the River to Pray.” Pairing the sonority of low voices—the viola and the alto voice—as well as showing a “focus on transcendence of faith over suffering and of peace…over suffering and pain.”

A suite for piano by Brookfield composer Erik Nielson, “Grace, Tommy, and the Angel” features music from his opera, “A Fleeting Animal” with Vermont poet David Budbill.

Also on the program, songs for alto,, viola, and piano by Johannes Brahms, and “Jesus the Good Shepherd,” an aria from a Bach cantata 85 with a lyrical cello part.
